Many athletes put a ton of time, money, sweat, and blood into high school sports. Most hope that they will capture a full ride scholarship to a division 1 college. Unfortunately only around 2% of high school athletes get even a partial scholarship. Many of these students could use the time to increase their academics to get a scholarship. Not even half of high school athletes make honor roll. Having honor roll not only increases your chances of getting an academic scholarship, but also can help them get into a better college. Only 2% of college athletes go pro. If you go get a masters or doctorate degree you are almost guaranteed to get a fair amount of money, vs investing all of your time in sports and not being able to get a good job. However, high school sports can be very beneficial, they give you a way to meet new people and stay active. So you should participate in high school sports, as long as they don't interfere with your academics.
